Summer Search New York City 7th Annual Young Leadership Cocktail

Summer Search, a high-impact program that gives low-income students the opportunities and support they need to transform their lives.

Also gives them support to achieve their own potential, and create change as role models and everyday leaders will hold their 7th Annual Youth Leadership Committee Cocktail on October 5, 2010. The event was held at NBC Universal in Rockefeller Plaza.

In 2004, a small group of committed young professionals from diverse backgrounds founded the Young Leadership Committee (YLC) to raise awareness about Summer Search’s unique investment in the leaders of tomorrow. Sponsorships and donations have tripled at this event since the Young Leadership Committee hosted their first annual cocktail event in 2004.

“By engaging with the students at this event, you can learn how compelling and insightful these future leaders are. All you have to do is listen as they reveal their personal journeys – academic, physical and emotional – and you share your own. In being there, you become witness to, and indeed a part of, their profound experiences through Summer Search,” said Young Leadership Committee Chair Scott Thomas. “The Young Leadership Committee was chartered to enable young professionals in the city to get to know Summer Search students and bring visibility to this unique program. We seek to support their growth through college and career counseling, corporate internships, role modeling, in-kind donations of goods and services, and, of course, financial support to the program.” In 2010, Summer Search’s YLC Cocktail was a resounding success; the fundraiser sold out 3 weeks prior to the event date.

Summer Search staff provide students with a unique combination of intensive year-round mentoring, full scholarships to summer experiential education programs, access to college and financial aid counseling, and a lasting support network, including access to professional development skill-building for alumni. This unique program model has proven to be quite successful; by bringing together these diverse program elements to invest comprehensively in students over the long-term has resulted in tremendous impact:
• 100% of Summer Search seniors graduated from high school
• 95% of Summer Search seniors matriculated to college, compared to 33% of their low-income peers
• 85% have completed college or remain enrolled and on track to do so, compared to 21% of their low-income peers nationally
• Over 90% of Summer Search graduating seniors are first generation college attendees
