“ORGANIC FOOD FROM FARM TO FAMILY” to Benefit Northeastern Organic Farming Association of New York

Christine Brinkley again chaired the second annual luncheon and education panel to benefit the Northeastern Organic Farming Association of New York (NOFA-NY) held at Guastavino’s, New York City. The Luncheon Chair was Margo M. Langenberg.

Guests entered the venue by walking through trees and bushes donated by Marder’s Nursery as well as trees from Board member Rex and Connie Farr’s organic farm in Riverhead. Robin Bell mixed and matched antique farm equipment and Torrance York photographs.

Brian Halweil, senior researcher with Worldwatch Institute and editor of Edible East End, Edible Manhattan and Edible Brooklyn, moderated the panel discussion with Honorees Deirdre Imus, of the Deirdre Imus Environmental Center for Pediatric Oncology and Imus Ranch; Bart Potenza and Joy Pierson, of Candle Cafe and Candle 79 restaurants; and Elizabeth Henderson from the Governing Council of NOFA-NY who also co-chairs the Organic Committee of the National Campaign for Sustainable Agriculture.

Each honoree made clear how everyone plays a role in creating a healthier food chain, whether as farmers, chefs, restaurant owners, butchers, food makers or just plain eaters. Many people are spending more time and energy on their food, and more of us are discovering ways of using food as a catalyst for change in the world around us. Deidre Imus specifically sees the food community in a broader sense as an important voice to affect change in the healthcare world.

NOFA-NY is committed to bringing education and information on economically sustainable agriculture to the public. It supports local farmers, gardeners and consumers who contribute to a healthier way of living by providing universal access to a fresh, regional food supply. It has broadened its mission beyond promoting organic to advocating healthy local food systems--particularly relevant in the face of large-scale food recalls, climate change and loss of local food traditions.
