One Hundred Black Men, Inc. of New York City 29th Annual Benefit Gala

They came from throughout New York City, New York State and the nation to celebrate four leaders in the worlds of business, finance, real estate and health care.

"Recognizing Our Past, Shaping Our Future" was the theme for the One Hundred Black Men, Inc. of New York City 29th Annual Benefit Gala held on Thursday, February 26, 2009, at the New York Hilton Grand Ballroom. The event featured a VIP reception at 6:30 p.m. Dinner and awards began at 7:30 p.m. followed by dancing.

The Black Tie event, hosted by WNBC-TV Anchor and Reporter DeMarco Morgan honored:

* Hon. Thomas P. DiNapoli, New York State Comptroller, with the Distinguished Service Award;

* R. Donahue Peebles,CEO and Chairman, The Peebles Corporation, with the Corporate Citizen Award;

* Malcolm D. Reid, M.D., M.P.P, Chairman, Department of Rehabilitation Medicine, St. Luke's – Roosevelt Hospital Center, with the Distinguished Physician Community Service Award; and

* John W. Rogers, Jr.,Chairman and CEO, Ariel Investments, with the Corporate Education Award.

* OHBMNY member Felton "Buddy" Johnson was saluted as Mentor of the Year.

"Following our nation's historic presidential election and inauguration, we could not be more excited at the opportunity to honor four men who are giants in business, finance, real estate and healthcare and whose work positively impacts our core program areas-mentoring, education, health and wellness, and economic development. As we celebrate more than four decades of achievement, One Hundred Black Men, Inc. is delighted to award the accomplishments of these four outstanding men," said OHBMNY president Philip L. Banks Jr.

Craig Simmons was Gala Chairman and the benefit committee members were: David P. Brand, Will Brown, Rev. Jacques A. DeGraff, Aldrin K. Enis, James C. Harrison, Jr., Tyrone Terrence McKinney, Fitzgerald Miller, Clarence Smith, Jr. and Hilton O. Smith.

ABOUT THE HONOREES

Thomas P. DiNapoli, the 54th Comptroller of the State of New York, has transformed the way the Comptroller's office does business since taking office in February 2007. Mr. DiNapoli has increased oversight of government spending, provided greater openness to the public and developed new opportunities for New York's entrepreneurs.

Mr. DiNapoli, as chief fiscal officer for the state, is responsible for managing the state's $154.5 billion pension fund, auditing the spending practices of all state agencies and local governments, overseeing the 1 million-member state and local government retirement system, reviewing the New York State and City budgets, approving state contracts, and administering the state Oil Spill Fund.

Mr. DiNapoli first gained recognition in 1972 when, at the age of 18, he was elected as a trustee of the Mineola Board of Education, becoming the youngest person in New York State to hold public office.

Prior to his career in public service, Mr. DiNapoli was a manager in the telecommunications industry and served as an adjunct professor. He holds an MA from The New School University's Graduate School of Management and Urban Professions. A lifelong resident of Nassau County, Mr. DiNapoli earned a BA in history from Hofstra University in Hempstead.

R. Donahue Peebles, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of The Peebles Corporation, is recognized as one of the most successful entrepreneurs in the nation. Peebles is the owner of The Peebles Corporation, the country's largest African American real estate development company with a $4 billion portfolio of completed or underway luxury hotels and high-rise residential and Class A commercial properties and developments in Washington, D.C., New York, San Francisco, Las Vegas and Miami Beach.

The 48-year old business leader has been featured in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, Black Enterprise, Ebony and Inc., because of his successful real estate projects. Mr. Peebles is a guest host on CNBC's Squawk Box and has been profiled on FOX NEWS with Neil Cavuto, CNBC's The Big Idea, Bloomberg Television, CNN Financial Network, ABC News Network, and has been a guest on the nationally syndicated "Tom Joyner Morning Show" and "Steve Harvey" radio programs.

A best-selling author, Mr. Peebles' first book, The Peebles Principles, Tales and Tactics from an Entrepreneur's Life of Winning Deals, Succeeding in Business and Creating a Fortune from Scratch, distills the lessons he learned on the road to building his successful company and personal fortune. His first-person accounts of his most intriguing deals illustrate the principles that guide Mr. Peebles in all of his transactions. His second book, The Peebles Path to Real Estate Wealth, released September 2008, outlines the fundamental tools for real estate investing and details how to make money in any market.

John W. Rogers, Jr. is founder, chairman and chief executive officer of
Ariel Investments, a Chicago-based money management firm that serves individual investors and 401(k) plans through its no-load mutual funds and manages separate accounts for institutional clients. In 1983, at the age of 24, Mr. Rogers founded the firm with an investment philosophy grounded in patience, discipline and independent thinking. Twenty-five years later his original philosophy still guides Ariel Investments today. Mr. Rogers is the lead portfolio manager of the firm's flagship Ariel Fund as well as its mid-cap counterpart Ariel Appreciation Fund. Additionally, as the firm's chief investment officer, he manages Ariel's small, small-mid and mid-cap institutional portfolios.

Mr. Rogers serves as a corporate board member of three public companies: Aon Corporation, Exelon Corporation and McDonald's Corporation. Also dedicated to giving back to the community, his civic affiliations include serving as a director of the Chicago Urban League, a trustee of the University of Chicago as well as a member of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation. In addition, he is a past president of the Board of the Chicago Park District. Mr. Rogers received an AB in economics in 1980 from Princeton University where he was also captain of the Varsity Basketball Team. In 2008, he was awarded Princeton's highest honor, the Woodrow Wilson Award, bestowed annually on a graduate whose career embodies a commitment to national service.

His investment expertise has brought him to the forefront of media attention. He is a regular columnist in Forbes magazine and is frequently quoted in various news and business publications including USA TODAY, The New York Times, Black Enterprise, Business Week and SmartMoney. In addition, he has made guest appearances on television shows ranging from CNBC to Fox News and has also spoken at many academic institutions.

Malcolm D. Reid, MD, is a native New Yorker, who was born in Brooklyn and raised in Mount Vernon. He graduated cum laude from Fordham University in 1982 with a BS degree in Biology. Dr. Reid matriculated at Harvard Medical School in 1982 graduating in June, 1987 with a dual degree - medical degree from Harvard Medical School and a Master of Public Policy degree from the Harvard University JFK School of Government. Dr. Reid completed his preliminary medicine internship at Winthrop-University Hospital in Mineola, New York and subsequently completed his residency and chief residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation in 1991 at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center. Dr. Reid received his board certification in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation in 1992.

Dr. Reid is a Past-President of both the New York County Medical Society, and the Manhattan Central Medical Society; New York State alternate delegate to the American Medical Association; and he is currently the Assistant Secretary of the Medical Society of the State of New York. Dr. Reid is a member of the New York State Minority Health Council, and was recently appointed by Governor Paterson to serve on The State Hospital Review and Planning Council.

ABOUT THE ONE HUNDRED BLACK MEN, INC. OF NEW YORK CITY

One Hundred Black Men, Inc. of New York City was founded in 1963 when a group of successful African-American men, including Judge Robert Mangum, David Dinkins and businessman J. Bruce Llewellyn came together to pool their resources to positively impact the Black community. Other members have included defense attorney Johnnie Cochran, actor and educator Bill Cosby, former Manhattan Borough President Percy Sutton, and current Board members U.S. Representatives Charles B. Rangel and Gregory Meeks.

One Hundred Black Men, Inc.'s service projects focus on mentoring, education, health and wellness, and economic development. The organization has a long and successful history working with its corporate and community partners to make significant differences in the lives of the communities it serves. Two celebrated examples are the establishment of The Eagle Academy for Young Men in the Bronx and in Brooklyn, each with a focus on academic excellence, leadership and character development.
