Garden State 5K Run/Walk for Pulmonary Fibrosis

Garden State 5K Run/Walk for Pulmonary Fibrosis

The Garden State 5K Run/Walk for Pulmonary Fibrosis on 9/26-09 at Nomahegan Park in Cranford, NJ was a huge success.

The event was sponsored by the Garden State Pulmonary Fibrosis Support Group to benefit the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation.

The purpose of the 5K was to raise awareness for this deadly disease and to fund research to find a cure. Pulmonary Fibrosis takes the lives of 40,000 Americans each year, which is equal to breast cancer. About two-thirds of PF patients pass away within five years of diagnosis.

Right now there is no known cure or treatment for Pulmonary Fibrosis. Only several hundred Pulmonary Fibrosis patients are lucky enough to receive lung transplants to extend their lives. But lung transplants are not available for the tens of thousands of victims.

The 5K Run/Walk was a success as a fundraiser and uplifting to all who participated. A lot of teamwork went into the event’s planning and implementation. Carrie D’Angelo and Dr Daniel Rose of the Pulmonary Fibrosis Foundation, headquartered in Chicago, were very helpful.

The organizers were Pulmonary Fibrosis patients, lung transplantees, their families, and friends. Several PF patients did the walk. The smiling faces of everyone who crossed the finish line, the good exercise, and sense of accomplishment were additional benefits.

Our thanks to all the donors, participants, as well as the merchants and businesses that donated food, refreshments, or services.

The GS Support Group is already planning another fundraiser for 2010.
