94th Annual New York City Heart Ball

Help, Heal and Hope for Heroes of the Heart

The American Heart Association Pays Tribute to Those Fighting Heart Disease and Stroke

The Milstein Hall of Ocean Life was filled with heroes on the evening of Tuesday, June 9th, 2009 at the American Museum of Natural History—celebrating life and medical advancements in the face of cardiovascular disease, the nation’s No.1 killer and No. 3 killer.

The American Heart Association held its 94th annual New York City Heart Ball that spotlighted an extraordinary group of individuals whose acts of survival and generosity are truly inspiring. The evening’s theme was help, heal and hope. The New York City Heart Ball supports the fight against heart disease and stroke, the nations No.1 and No.3 killers. Funds raised will be invested in research, professional education, advocacy and community service programs so people across America can live longer, stronger lives.

David Ushery, of 4 New York, emceed the American Heart Association’s biggest night: filled with glitz, glamour, and the essential fundraising to support cardiovascular research across the country. This year more than 700 people were in attendance and the event raised more than $1.5 million. The event was chaired by Michael A. Mussallem, Chairman and CEO, Edwards Lifesciences.

The American Heart Association awarded David H. Adams, MD, Professor and Chairman, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Mount Sinai School of Medicine, the 2009 Achievement in Cardiovascular Science and Medicine award; Robert A. Solomon, MD, Chairman and Director of Service, Columbia University Medical Center, the Stroke Spotlight Award; and named sanofi-aventis Company of the Year.

“Sanofi-aventis has had a long history and presence in the area of research and development in cardiovascular disease, and we are grateful to American Heart Association for this honor,” remarked Greg Irace, President and CEO, sanofi-aventis U.S. “Cardiovascular disease remains one of the greatest health challenges today—one that we cannot fight alone. We look forward to future collaborations with the American Heart Association to increase awareness and reduce risks of heart disease and stroke.”

The American Heart Association also paid special tribute to the evening’s heart heroes—the inspiration who played muses of the heart for the event. Additionally, the Executive Leadership Team as well as the Medical Leadership Team were honored for their dedication to cardiovascular wellness.

“We are proud to support the American Heart Association in its mission to help, heal and provide hope for patients and their families suffering from heart disease and stroke,” said Mussallem. “Dr. David Adams, Dr. Robert Solomon, and company of the year, sanofi-aventis, to whom we paid tribute last night, are wonderful examples of two individuals and a company who are living this vision by advancing the treatment of cardiovascular disease. All of the honorees and the American Heart Association are making a real difference every day."

Special thanks to the event supporters sanofi-aventis, Edwards Lifesciences, Mount Sinai: Heart, Forest Laborites, Inc, Schering-Plough and to media sponsors 4 New York and Telemundo 47.
